Artist date: New Anthropologie Catalog

I recently met with a naturopath to address feeling fatigued and low energy and aside from prescribing 2000iu's of Vitamin D daily to deal with my extremely low level of Vitamin D and a dreamy Auyerveidc drink called Golden Milk which I have yet to try, she prescribed doing something fun and joyous for myself every day. How come I have to be hit over the head with this same suggestion every few months?

And well Artist Dates are one of those things that I love. Do you know the concept?

In their essence, they are a weekly commitment to fun, play and joy. They don't need to be artistic or creative. Basically it is spending time alone doing something that nurtures a part of who you are. I think as moms we often don't give ourselves the permission to do this sort of thing because it doesn't have a quantifiable action or result.

Luckily for me my Artist Dates usually involve some sort of home design/product store which is thankfully aligned with the theme of this blog, making it both easier to convince myself to spend the time both to do and to share.

I didn't make it out for an Artist Date this week so I did a stay-Artist Date. Okay, that doesn't work as well as stay-cation but you get the point. It was me, the new Anthropologie catalog and a cup of tea and a little boy playing in the sandbox. And now, while he is sleeping, I get to share it.

And here is what happened to catch my eye...

Dhurrie Chair

Striped Linen Pillows

Continental Sofa (though I don't know how functional/comfortable it really is)

Slate Insert Coffee Table

Vintage iPhone Dock (can't help it - I love this)

A little bit of sunshine

I really LOVE this yellow upholstered bed. I really wish that I needed it but I really don't. Or I wish I knew someone who could use it. And it's a steal at $399!

The skies are gray and dreary but my morning adventures at 2 local furniture consignment stores provided to have a common theme: little bit of sunshine.

This bin could be so fun for toy storage - but $199 is a bit too much to gather play things in!

This armoire is a little rustic/country looking but it still caught my eye.

But what I really wanted was this lamp - this semi-70's inspired large, yellow beauty. Really I have a vision. And for only $29, I should have bought it. But I am pretty sure I would have gotten the thumbs down from my husband. Makes me think I need a warehouse of my own to stockpile these treasures...

Artist date: Visiting new West Elm store

I did some browsing at the new West Elm store yesterday. It's all Christmas and rustic and blingy. That's not a word but I think you get the idea.

Check out their holiday here.

I left with only a pair of king pillow shams (which were a planned purchase) but it was really hard to say no to bringing this white felt ball wreath home with me.

It's bad we are not into lighting yet on our house project, because at 20% there were some really great fixtures so even better prices. A few items that stood out included these Capiz Orb Pendants

And this ultra chunky Emerson dining table

And a really cute little chair that I actually can't find on their website...

And this clever coffee table that is available in rustic and white lacquer...I even got an unsolicited "Oh, I like that!" from my husband! Love it when it's that easy!

Heading to the Beach House

Do you ever go on Artist's Dates? Do you know the concept? It is from Julie Cameron's Artist's Way and it is simple: Take time for yourself that nurtures your creative self, whatever that may be. For me, Artist Dates often include thrifts stores and flea markets. I haven't been on many Artist's Dates in the last 5 months - have been doing baby.

I finally made it to Beach House Style in Fairfax though last week, with my sidekick in tow. It only took me two years. I knew I would love it. And I did.

A perfect sunny day and dreams of our garden remodel becoming a reality made me want to load up the car. Luckily I had a baby in one arm and a rug purchase from craigslist taking up all the room in the trunk. But I didn't leave empty handed.

Love this peg rack for outside for hot tub towels?

Or this dreamy work table?

Or these orange chairs? Just need some white cushions and ooh, la, la!

But it was these babies who came home with me. Not quite sure where they will go or if they will stay their natural rattan color but I couldn't leave them behind.

And now a week later I am still thinking about the work table. Might have to see if its still available...

Friday night window shopping

Taza Rug from homedecorators.com

At some point in the last year, I had actually cancelled all of our catalog subscriptions and though the daily trip to the mailbox became much less exciting, it felt extremely rewarding to see so much less waste and be less enticed to consume.

And then we moved.

And then I must have ordered something from some home store or website and baby, the catalogs are starting to roll right on in. In fact, yesterday, it was like a gold mine - Serena + Lily, Ballard Designs, Restoration Hardware baby and child. Let's just say it's a pile of eye candy just waiting for me and in my oh so pregnant state, I can't think of anything more fun.

So what does my Friday night look like?

You can see the fruits of my exploring in my Pinterest - my home wish list, great textiles, and interesting furniture details. The trouble is I started with the catalog from homedecorators.com - a cleverly marketing wing of Home Depot, with some treasures amongst the mundane and downright tacky. The problem is the quality, which I can't speak to as I have never ordered anything. But for inspiration of design and at least some fun web browsing, it was a good place to start.

Artist date: A touch of green

Somehow I just knew that I would love it here. I just didn't know how much.

Tucked away, far off any place that you would just drive past is Green Door Design. Small, organic and really just right, this treasure full of orchids and succulents has just been added to my "don't need to ever go any place else" list for my greenery needs. Funny how a wrong turn can end up being exactly right.

As a little Christmas present for myself, I took two of my favorite unused containers to them (a service that they provide) for the cost of the materials they use and a day later I got this...

and this...

I am absurdly attached to this succulent display as it has brought this box out of hiding. We used this wooden contraption to hold the utensils at our wedding buffet and for almost 6 years I have been trying to figure out what to use it for. It barely survived the de-cluttering and simplifying of our last two moves but something in me wasn't quite ready to let go.

Now I know why...it was waiting for this.

A visit to Heath

Just look at the color.

Even when something doesn't seem to fit in your budget, consider it anyway. There are back splashes and trim and accent pieces. The trick is to know how to marry commercial grade materials with hand-made crafts pieces, like any of these tiles from Heath Ceramics.

I came home with a handful of samples but what I wanted to come home with was a number 1 and a number 2. Because seriously, these house tiles, are the best that I have seen.

Will have to wait until we actually remodel the front gate and entry way, but these will be coming home.

An unplanned artist date

Do you know the concept of artist dates?

It's simple:

An Artist Date is a once-weekly, festive, solo expedition to explore something that interests you. The Artist Date need not be overtly "artistic"-- think mischief more than mastery. (via The Artists Way)

I first learned about artists dates and morning pages when I devoured a copy of Julia Cameron's The Artists Way, almost 10 years ago. It came to me like so many things have come to me in my life: at the time, when I needed it the most.

I diligently followed the exercizes and even stuck with the ritual of daily morning pages - all in an attempt to find clarity and my creativity.

I was mostly transformed by the concept of the artist date because it gave a name to something that I craved, but rarely did. I need solitude, a lot of it. And I need quiet and I need time for reflection. And I need opportunities to watch and observe and be inspired. And I need beautiful things. Or at least time to look at beautiful things.

It was easy to incorporate artist dates into my single life in San Francisco. I only needed to walk down Valencia Street between 16th and 17th Streets, for example. As a wife, it became harder for me to take this time, though as I realized how truly essential it is to my state of being, I found it easier to take the time I needed. Now as a mom, well, do I really have to say it?

It's impossible. Ok, it's impossible for me.

It's impossible for me because it means asking for a babysitter for something that is not "practical".

It's impossible for me because it means asking for something for me, just me and nobody else.

It's impossible for me because it means asking for time by myself that does not include physical exercise, showering, sleeping, grocery shopping, meditation, tax paying, bill paying or a social get together with the lovely women in my life. I have internally put a value judgement on my need for artist dates, have assumed others do the same and as you can see, they get valued less than paying bills. How twisted and not funny is that?

But there is something brewing in the air - a re-aligning with what makes me me. A learning process that involves me asking for what I need. I am not sure what path it is going to take, but it feels good.

So on Monday, when I happened to have 20 unexpected, child and husband free minutes in San Francisco, instead of sitting in the car and checking emails or heading home and stopping at Whole Foods, I parked, fed the meter and without a care wandered into Past Perfect, a consignment furniture store in the Marina.

And here is what caught my fancy...

I am dreaming of a work space of my own. Digging this chair. I am envisioning it painted white with a new pillow, in orange wool pillow or something like that.

Old lobster cage - add a piece of glass and you have one cool coffee table. I sort of like the ceramic ram piece too - don't ask me what I would do with it.

Just really like this yellow cabinet - not really sure what I would use it for.

It's hard not to have toys on the brain, or at least toy storage. Thought these old metal baskets would look really great in the living room.

And old school desk - a perfect craft table for a toddler! Or 2 vintage toddler chairs could do the trick too.

Now, 2 days later, I am still thinking of the wicker chair. I was "good" and brought no new project home with me because I have plenty of half-started creative endeavors waiting for my attention. So, I will lock it away in my memory bank. More importantly though, 2 days later, I am feeling the affect of choosing to do something impractical and not feel guilty about it at all. I might have to do it again, sometime soon.
